Desperados - A Unique European Beer

Last time in Europe I stumbled across Desperados, a beer that contains tequila.  At first, the concept seemed icky, but once I tried it I really liked it.  The problem is that its hard to find.  Made in France, distribution is somewhat limited and only in Europe. 

But once we hit the streets of Barcelona, it became a primary objective to find it again.  We must have visited a dozen bars, where not only was Desperados not on the menu, but they had never heard of it.  Finally I found a bartender who knew it well and he gave the name of a place he presumed would have it.  We headed there in anxious anticipation of finding it, only to learn that they didn't have it either.  But the owner of that pub, sent us to another one, where low and behold - there it was, finally.

As a result, we consumed quite a few and it was well worth the effort to find.

So its not a margarita, but if ever in Europe, you might want to give it a shot... if you can find it.

Margarita - My Bar - Barcelona

Wandering through some of the side streets that branch off of The Ramblas, yields all kinds of bars and clubs.  One in particular that we decided to try was My Bar, which is actually an English Pub of sorts (lot of Pubs in Barcelona).  Just for fun I asked the Bartender if she could make a margarita, and though her English was not too good, she knew exactly what drink that was.

So for the next 10 minutes, she carefully mixed, poured and shook a couple of drinks for us.  It was impressive how much effort she put into the concoction.  And the price wasn't bad either, about 6 euros for each one. 

And then came the moment of truth - the first sip.  OMG, it was horrible beyond belief, unless of course you like over-sized tequila shots, cause there wasn't much else in it.  The clear color should have been the give-away.  But what the heck, we were in an English Pub somewhere in the city center of Barcelona, so what do you expect?

So as a margarita, this one ranks a 1 at best.  But in terms of a quick drunk it's a definite 5.
